LD47/proceed - Patch 4 (Version 0.14)


PATCH FOUR: We gotta talk about Red.

v0.14

Synopsis:

There is no other explanation. Red is simply cursed and the world would be better without it.

In this update:

  • Two lines of code added to the GameManager to stop the Rigidbody of EvilBall (Red) on reset
  • One new boolean for evilBall that activates after clicking, and one tweak to the intermission check that makes the game check this new var instead of whether the object exists or not.
  • Four minor changes in the Inspector
  • A fancy checkbox that magically made the game smaller by compressing videos properly
  • Several torn-out hairs and vows of revenge directed at Red

So, basically business as usual. Red’s Warehouse tag was dropped, a Reflection Probe was removed just to be safe (I thought I did it in Patch 1!), and… it wouldn’t be a proceed patch without Red blocking progression now, would it?

Patchnotes:

  • Fix: Warehouse cleanup routine will no longer despawn Red – Thank you, Fatsheep__!
  • Fix: Red velocity on respawn properly resets
  • Tweak: Lightswitch no longer has player collision
  • Tweak: Reflection probes on Red removed
  • Fix: Player will not be looped back if Red is still exploding but alive
  • Transcoding: Game file size significantly reduced

Other versions of the game (e.g. Linux, WebGL) may come later. WebGL in particular has been problematic when it comes to video playback, and whether I will be able to properly investigate this issue remains to be seen.

Concluding notes:

I plan on fully purging Red’s involvement in any core level in the post-jam release of proceed. In fact, I will design an entire level around punishing Red for its crimes. I hate Red with a burning passion, more than any game villain, more than the most wicked villains of literature. I never thought I would see a villain worse than the likes of Sidious, Iago, or Galbatorix, and yet I appear to have created my own worst nemesis. What a world.
